A twisted sum of two Banach spaces \(Z\) and \(X\) is a quasi-Banach space \(Y\) containing a copy of \(Z\) in such a way that the quotient \(Y/Z\) is isomorphic to \(X\). A twisted sum \(Y\) of \(Z\) and \(X\) is singular provided that the quotient map \(Y\to Y/Z=X\) is strictly singular, i.e., none of its restrictions to an infinite-dimensional subspace is an isomorphism onto its image. A powerful method for constructing a non-trivial (i.e., not of the form of a direct sum) twisted sum of a sequence space with itself was developed by \textit{N. J. Kalton} and \textit{N. T. Peck} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 255, 1--30 (1979; Zbl 0424.46004)], where a singular twisted sum of a Hilbert space with itself was built. The so-called Kalton-Peck map was used, in particular, in [\textit{F. Cabello Sánchez} et al., Nonlinear Anal., Theory Methods Appl., Ser. A, Theory Methods 75, No. 7, 3313--3321 (2012; Zbl 1248.46013)] to show that any Banach space with an unconditional basis not isomorphic to \(c_0\) admits a non-trivial twisted sum with itself. A natural question concerns the properties of twisted sums given by the Kalton-Peck map, in particular, their singularity. The author studies the case of a twisted sum of a space of Schreier and Tsirelson type with itself, defined by the Kalton-Peck map. He proves, in particular, that the obtained twisted sums of a Schreier-like space and a Tsirelson space are not locally convex, in contrast to the twisted sums of Schreier spaces constructed by \textit{H. M. Jebreen} et al. [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 323, No. 2, 864--875 (2006; Zbl 1112.46014)]. The other observations include the fact that the Kalton-Peck map is not singular on the Schreier space (as this space contains \(c_0\)) and a criterion on nontriviality of the Kalton-Peck map on a block subspace of a space with an unconditional basis in terms of the size of supports of the generating blocks generating the subspace.
