The authors consider functional identities on matrix algebras. They deal with the FI of the type \(\sum_{k\in K}F_k(\overline x^k_m)x_k=\sum_{l\in L}x_l G_l(\overline x^l_m)\). Here \(R=M_n(F)\) is the full matrix algebra of order \(n\), \(F_k\) and \(G_l\) are functions from \(R^{m-1}\to R\), \(K\) and \(L\) are subsets of \(\{1,2,\ldots,m\}\), and \(\overline x^k_m=(x_1,\ldots,\widehat{x_k},\ldots,x_m)\) (\(x_k\) is missing), analogously for \(\overline x^l_m\). The authors describe completely the solutions of such functional identities. They prove, moreover, that the nonstandard ones follow from the Hamilton-Cayley identity.
