Let \(X\) be a complete metric space, \({\mathcal R}\) be a binary relation over \(X\) and \(T:X\to X\) be a selfmap. The following is the main result of this paper. {Theorem.} Let us consider the conditions {\parindent=6mm \begin{itemize} \item[(i)] \(X(T,{\mathcal R})\) is nonempty \item [(ii)] \({\mathcal R}\) is \(T\)-closed \item [(iii)] either \(T\) is continuous or \({\mathcal R}\) is \(d\)-self-closed \item [(iv)] there exists \(\alpha\in [0,1[\) such that \(d(Tx,Ty)\leq \alpha d(x,y)\), for each \(x,y\in X\), \((x,y)\in {\mathcal R}\) \item [(v)] \(\Gamma(x,y,{\mathcal R}^s)\) is nonempty, for each \(x,y\in X\). \end{itemize}} Then, the following conclusions hold (K1) Under (i)-(iv), \(T\) has a fixed point in \(X\) (K2) Under (i)-(v), \(T\) has a unique fixed point in \(X\). Some particular cases of the main result are then given, so as to get a better comparison with existing statements in the area.
