Let \(G\) be a finite solvable group, and let \(\phi\) be a non-trivial real irreducible Brauer character in characteristic \(2\). The authors define and study the concept of an extended nucleus for \(\phi\). This uses both Isaacs's theory of a nucleus, as well as the recent results of the first author on symmetric vertices [J. Algebra 462, 338--374 (2016; Zbl 1397.20024)]. They prove among other results that \(G\) will have a real representation whose character has Frobenius-Schur indicator \(1\) and lifts \(\phi\), answering a question of \textit{W. Willems} [Prog. Math. 95, 509--520 (1991; Zbl 0789.20007)].
