\textit{T. N. Fomenko} [Topology Appl. 157, No. 4, 760--773 (2010; Zbl 1191.54037)] defined the notion of \((\alpha,\beta)\)-search functional on a metric space \((X,\rho)\): Let \(0<\beta<\alpha\) be real numbers. A non-negative function \(\phi\) on \(X\) is called an \((\alpha,\beta)\)-search functional if for each \(x\in X\) there is an \(x'\in X\) with \(\rho(x,x')\leq\phi(x)/\alpha\) and \(\phi(x')\leq(\beta/\alpha)\phi(x)\). The present authors generalize this to the assumption that for any \(x\in X\) and \(\delta>0\) there is an \(x'\in X\) such that \(\rho(x,x')\leq\phi(x)/\alpha+\delta\) and \(\phi(x')\leq(\beta/\alpha)\phi(x)+\delta\), and they obtain coincidence point results in the spirit of Fomenko's article. Moreover, they generalize some results obtained by \textit{A. V. Arutyunov} [Dokl. Math. 76, No. 2, 665--668 (2007; Zbl 1152.54351); translation from Dokl. Akad. Nauk, Ross. Akad. Nauk 416, No. 2, 151--155 (2007)].
