The initial boundary value problem for the Oseen system (depending on the parameter \(\alpha\)) in an exterior domain of \(\mathbb R^n\), \(n=2\), is considered. The large time behaviour of the solutions \(u(t)\) is studied. For this, the \(L^r\) norms of \(u(t)\) and \(\nabla u(t)\) are estimated in terms of the \(L^q\) norm of the initial condition. By a perturbation argument related with the Stokes system, in [\textit{T. Miyakawa}, Hiroshima Math. J. 12, 115--140 (1982; Zbl 0486.35067)] was proved that the Oseen operator generates an analytical semigroup. In the present paper, it is proved that this semigroup is uniformly bounded in the standard solenoidal Lebesgue space (see the definition in Sect. 2), if \(r=q\). The large time behaviour of the solutions is related with the Oseen resolvent (with parameter \(\lambda\)), which for \(n=2\) has a specific singularity. The decay properties of the fundamental solutions are obtained by using the asymptotic expansion of the modified Bessel functions, for small values of the parameters \(\alpha\), \(\lambda\).
