The author investigates the quasi-optimality of adaptive finite element methods for controlling local energy errors. He first provides a number of definitions and preliminaries. Then he provides a brief discussion and as necessary proves a number of a priori, a posteriori, and adaptive finite element methods. Statement, proof and discussion of the main results are given. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the theory discussed.
