The authors consider dissipative second-order differential equations and study the stability properties of the associated semigroups. Using a Riesz basis approach, they show for a class of Petrovsky-like semigroups that, if the self-adjoint part of the infinitesimal generator \(A\) satisfies a certain spectral gap condition, then the growth bound of the associated semigroup coincides with \(\sup\{\operatorname{Re} \lambda:\lambda\in\sigma(A)\}\), where \(\sigma(A)\) denotes the spectrum of \(A\). The result is illustrated using the example of the damped Euler-Bernoulli beam, and the authors also indicate how their results can be extended to certain non-dissipative systems such as the Euler-Bernoulli beam with a force term.
