In this paper, the author considers the divergence form operator \[ A = - \frac{\partial}{\partial x} c(x) \frac{\partial}{\partial x} \] in \(L^2(\mathbb R)\), where \(c: \mathbb R\rightarrow \mathbb C\) is a Lipschitz continuous function. The author characterises for which \(p\in [1, \infty)\) the semigroup generated by \(- A\) extends consistently to a contraction \(C_0\) semigroup in \(L^p(\mathbb R)\) and for those \(p\) the author characterises when \(C^\infty_0\) is a core for the generator in \(L^p(\mathbb R)\).
