The authors considered the following damped wave equation: \[ u_{tt}+ \gamma u_t-\Delta u+f(u)=g,\eqno{(1)} \] under homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions and initial conditions \[ u(x,0)=u_0(x)\; (\text{in }H_{0}^{1}(\Omega)),\; u_{t}(x,0)=u_{1}(x)\; (\text{in } L^{2}(\Omega)), \] in a bounded smooth domain \(\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^3\), where \(\gamma\) is a positive constant, \(g \in L^{2}\left(\Omega\right)\) and \(f\) is assumed to have quintic growth rate: \(f(u) \sim u^5\) as \(u \rightarrow \infty\). The main result of the paper establishes that the so-called Shatah-Struwe solution semigroup \(S(t): \mathcal{E} \rightarrow \mathcal{E}\) associated with \((1)\) possesses a global attractor \(\mathcal{A}\) in \(\mathcal{E}:=H_{0}^{1}(\Omega) \times L^{2}(\Omega)\) which is a bounded set in \[ \mathcal{E}_1:=\left[H^{2}(\Omega) \cap H_{0}^{1}(\Omega)\right] \times H_{0}^{1}(\Omega). \] A Shatat-Struwe solution of \((1)\) is defined in the paper as a weak solution \(u(t), t \in [0,T],\) that satisfies \(u \in L^{4}(0,T;L^{12}(\Omega))\). Their local existence, energy equality property, global existence (satisfying a Strichartz type estimate), uniqueness, regularity as well as other properties are established in the third section of the paper. The paper also contains the corresponding results for the sub-quintic (but super-cubic) growth rate cases. | |||
