The author gives an overview of his work on Shimura varieties, especially the association of Galois representations to torsion classes in cohomology. The results are conjectures in general and theorems in the Siegel case. The main technical tools is that for an infinite level structure at p the corresponding covering becomes perfectoid, and admits a Hodge-Tate map to the compact dual symmetric space.
