There is a study on the Cauchy problem for the semilinear energy critical wave equation in \(\mathbb R^d \) with \({3}\leqq {d}\leqq {5}\). The difference to the model considered by \textit{C. E. Kenig} and \textit{F. Merle} [Acta Math. 201, No. 2, 147--212 (2008; Zbl 1183.35202)] is that in the wave equation the power type nonlinearity is generalized by multiplying it with a coefficient function. The aim of the present work is to obtain, for this case, similar results as those of Kenig and Merle. One proves that in the defocusing case, for special coefficient functions, the solution to the Cauchy problem exists globally in time and scatters. In the focusing case and for coefficient functions satisfying additional conditions, the global behavior and the maximal interval of existence of the solution to the Cauchy problem has been determined. In the first section, the idea of the proof for both main results is explained. In the second and third sections, a brief review on Strichartz estimates, the local theory and results regarding the wave equation with a pure power-type nonlinearity, linear profile decomposition and nonlinear profiles are presented. Further, Sections four, five and six are devoted to the detailed proof of main results. As an application, in the last section, radial solutions to an energy-critical, focusing, semilinear shifted wave equation on the hyperbolic space \(H^3\) are shown.
