The dynamics of Hénon maps in \(\mathbb C ^k\) is studied. Those are polynomial automorphisms of \(\mathbb C ^k\) which after extension to \(\mathbb P ^k\) have non-empty indeterminacy sets \(I_+\) such that \(I_+ \cap I_{-} = \emptyset\), where \( I_{-}\) is the indeterminacy set of the inverse mapping. The pull-backs of the Fubini-Study form in \(\mathbb P ^k\) by suitably normalized iterations of a Hénon map \(f\) (resp. \(f ^{-1}\)) define positive \((1,1)\)-currents \[ \tau _+ = \lim _{n\to\infty }d_+ ^{-n}( f^n )^{\ast } (\omega _{FS} ) \] (resp. \(\tau _-\)). For the integer \(p\) satisfying \(\dim I_+ = k-p-1\), \(\dim I_- =p-1\), the equilibrium measure or the Green measure of \(f\) and \(f^{-1}\) is defined as \[ \mu = \tau _+ ^p \wedge \tau _- ^{k-p} . \] The main result of the paper says that saddle periodic points are equidistributed with respect to \(\mu\). More precisely, let \(P_n\) be the set of periodic points of period \(n\), and let \(SP_n\) be its subset consisting of saddle points. Then \[ \lim _{n\to\infty } d^{-n}\sum _{a} \delta _a \to \mu , \] where \(\delta _a\) denotes the Dirac measure at \(a\), \(d= d_+ ^p\) is the so-called dynamical degree of \(f\), and summation is over either \(P_n\) or \(SP_n\). Furthermore, the same is true if we sum up over \(SP_n ^{\epsilon}\), \(\epsilon \in (0,1)\), where \(SP_n ^{\epsilon}\) are the points \(a\) in \(SP_n\) such that the differential \(Df^n (a)\) admits exactly \(p\) eigenvalues of modulus larger than \((d_+ \epsilon )^{n/2}\) and \(k-p\) eigenvalues of modulus smaller than \((d_+ -\epsilon )^{-n/2}\). This is a very deep result requiring the rich theory of closed positive currents and their intersections developed by the authors in their previous papers.
