In this paper, the authors study theta representations of the covers of \(\mathrm{GL}_j\), \(j\geq 1\) over ring of adeles \(\mathbb{A}\) of a number field \(F\). An automorphic theta representation is one which has, at almost all places, a twisted local theta representation as a local factor. Especially interesting are those (global) theta representation which are cuspidal; even more so, those cuspidal theta representations for which those twists of local constituents are all coming from one Grossencharacter. Their existence, for \(j\geq 3,\) is still, largely, unknown. Here, the authors give some necessary conditions for the existence of such representations for every rank \(j\). We describe the main result. So, let \(\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{A})^{(r)}\) denote an \(r\)-fold cover of \(\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{A}),\) as defined by \textit{D. A. Kazhdan} and \textit{S. J. Patterson} [Publ. Math., Inst. Hautes Étud. Sci. 59, 35--142 (1984; Zbl 0559.10026)]. Then, if one fixes a natural number \(r\) and and automorphic character \(\chi\) as mentioned above, then there is at most one \(n\) such that there exists this non-zero cuspidal theta representation of \(\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{A})^{(r)}\) attached to \(\chi.\) Moreover, if such \(n\) exists, then \(n\) divides \(r\) and if such \(n\) is greater of equal to three, then \(\chi\) cannot be \(r\)-th power of another Grossencharacter. The results follow largely by using Fourier expansion along various unipotent subgroups, and determining set of the unipotent orbits attached to related automorphic representations.
