A boundary layer method is combined with an asymptotic expansion method to approximate the traveling wave solution of a nonlocal delayed reaction-diffusion model. The paper is organized as follows. Section 1 is an introduction. In Section 2 the problem is reduced to the case that \(D_I=0\). Then a boundary layer method is employed to approximate the wave solution of the reduced model. In Section 3 different birth functions are employed to obtain the approximate wave solutions and they are numerically compared with the exact wave solutions. In Section 4 the boundary layer method and the generalized Watson's lemma are employed to approximate the wave solution of the general model. In Section 5 the implications of the main results and the biological rationale of the main assumptions are discussed.
