The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with large self-similar initial data in a specific weak Lebesgue space in \(\mathbb R^3\) are considered. A local self-similar Leray solution is obtained and estimated in terms of the homogeneous heat equation in \(\mathbb R^3\). The main point is to construct time-periodic solutions to the Leray system in \(\mathbb R^3\), verifying a local energy estimate; this result is used to get (directly) a stationary weak solution for Leray's equation. This paper is related with the result of [\textit{J. Nečas} et al., Acta Math. 176, No. 2, 283--294 (1996; Zbl 0884.35115)], where was proved that the only self-similar solution to the Navier-Stokes equations, satisfying the global energy estimates, is zero. Moreover, this paper improves the results given in [\textit{H. Jia} and \textit{V. Šverák}, Invent. Math. 196, No. 1, 233--265 (2014; Zbl 1301.35089)] and [\textit{M. Korobkov} and \textit{T.-P. Tsai}, Anal. PDE 9, No. 8, 1811--1827 (2016; Zbl 1358.35094)].
