The authors use a groupoid approach in order to prove a graded uniqueness theorem for Kumjian-Park algebras defined in this paper for including algebras associated to finitely aligned higher-rank graphs. As a corollary of this theorem, they show that each Kumjian-Park algebra is isomorphic to a Steinberg algebra associated to its boundary path groupoid. Using all these facts, a study of simplicity and basic simplicity of Kumjian-Park algebras is achieved.
