\textit{D. Mumford} [Prog. Math. 36, 271--328 (1983; Zbl 0554.14008)] established a formula for the Chern character of the Hodge bundle on the moduli space of curves with \(n\) markings in terms of the tautological classes and Bernoulli numbers. \textit{A. Chiodo} [Compos. Math. 144, No. 6, 1461--1496 (2008; Zbl 1166.14018)] generalized Mumford's formula to the moduli spaces of curves with \(r\)th roots of suitably twisted powers of the canonical class. In this paper the authors analyze Chiodo's formula from the viewpoint of the topological recursion. In particular, they derive nice applications towards counting orbifold Hurwitz numbers.
