The authors study an optimal smoothing effect for entropy solutions of multidimensional scalar conservation laws \(u_t+\operatorname{div}_x F(u)=0\). They show that the optimal regularity parameter coincides with \(1/d_F\) where an integer \(d_F\) characterizes the nonlinearity of the flux vector \(F=F(u)\). For the proof the theory of fractional BV spaces is utilized.
