Both spline approximation methods, especially those using the well-known, compactly supported B-splines, and wavelet and prewavelet expansions are important tools in approximation theory and harmonic analysis. In this context, especially compact support of the wavelet functions, their spline structure, as well as the orthogonality of the shifts of the wavelets (in contrast to prewavelets where orthogonality on each level of the translates of the expanding basis functions is no longer required) are desirable properties. The authors show in this paper how to construct wavelets that unite these useful features in one function from a univariate piecewise polynomial spline space.
