This article studies the separability and integrability of two-dimensional Hamiltonian systems. Systems with higher degrees of freedom have no such conformal separability of coordinates. The paper is rather short and is intended for the experts of the field as a certain knowledge is needed to follow all the intermediate steps. After a quite detailed review of integrability and separability of Hamiltonian systems, the authors define integrability conditions for second-rank Killing tensors in the weak and strong case and discuss the weak integrability in some detail. Finally, fourth-order invariants at arbitrary energy that correspond to second-rank Killing tensors are investigated. They conclude with remarks on systems with indefinite metrics.
