The author introduces the governing equations for thermal convection in a vertical channel, where he takes a look at the energy equation with and without pressure work. In addition, viscous dissipation for the flow is considered. In more detail, he deals with four different settings: forced convection with fixed wall temperatures or insulated walls as well as free convection with fixed wall temperatures or fixed wall heat fluxes. Based on this, the perturbation solutions are examined and the corresponding velocity and temperature profiles are plotted.
