The paper develops a Schwarz technique for the parallel numerical solution of partial differential equations. An asynchronous version of the optimized Schwarz method is proposed. Asynchronous methods refer to parallel iterations where each process performs its task without waiting for other processes to be completed, i.e., with whatever information it has locally available and with no synchronizations with other processes. The authors prove the convergence of the asynchronous iterations for a general differential operator and optimal interface conditions and show the convergence for approximate optimized conditions for the Laplacian operator in practical computations. Numerical experiments conducted on the gravitational analysis in the Yucatan Peninsula illustrate the convergence properties of the asynchronous optimized Schwarz method. Numerical experiments justify that the asynchronous version is superior to the synchronous one in computational time.
