Similarly to the well-known expansions of rapidly decreasing functions and tempered distributions with respect to Hermite functions [\textit{B. Simon}, J. Math. Phys. 12, 140--148 (1971; Zbl 0205.12901)], this paper studies expansions of distributions in the Zemanian spaces \(\mathcal{H}_\mu\) and \(\mathcal{H}'_\mu\) with respect to Laguerre functions. In the first half of the paper, isomorphisms \(\mathcal{H}_\mu \cong \mathbf{s}\) and \(\mathcal{H}_\mu' \cong \mathbf{s}'\) are established, where \(\mathbf{s}\) and \(\mathbf{s}'\) are the spaces of rapidly decreasing and slowly increasing sequences, respectively. Using these representations, the kernel theorem and a structure theorem for \(\mathcal{H}_\mu'\) are obtained. In the second half of the paper, these results are employed for the construction of an algebra of generalized functions in the sense of Colombeau. The resulting algebra turns out to be well-adapted to the Hankel transform and the Hankel convolution.
