A Banach space \(X\) is said to satisfy the weak Banach-Saks property if every weakly null sequence in \(X\) admits a subsequence whose arithmetic means converge to zero in norm. In this paper, it is proved that some Banach function spaces obtained as the optimal extension domain of an appropriate operator satisfy the weak Banach-Saks property. As examples, we have the spaces \[ \big\{f\in L^1(G) : \nu\ast |f|\in L^p(G)\big\},\quad 1 < p < \infty, \] where \(\nu\) is a positive Borel measure on a compact abelian group \(G\), and \[ \big\{f:[0,1]\to \mathbb{R} : \int_0^1 |f(y)|\cdot|x-y|^{\alpha-1} dy \in X\big\}, \] where \(0<\alpha<1\) and \(X\) is a rearrangement invariant space on \([0,1]\) satisfying the weak Banach-Saks property and such that \(X\) and \(X^*\) have the subsequence splitting property. Each of the appropriate operators involved in the definition of the spaces has associated a vector measure \(m\), and an important step in the proof of the result is to show that the space \(L_1(m)\) of \textit{R. G. Bartle}, \textit{N. Dunford} and \textit{J. Schwartz} [Can. J. Math. 7, 289--305 (1955; Zbl 0068.09301)] has the subsequence splitting property and satisfies the weak Banach-Saks property.
