A Jacobi-type operator pencil has the form \(J_5-\lambda J_3\) where \(J_3\) is a Jacobi matrix and \(J_5\) is a semi-infinite real symmetric five-diagonal matrix with positive numbers on the second subdiagonal. With a Jacobi-type pencil of matrices, the author associates a system of polynomials. Conversely, with any orthogonal system one can associate a Jacobi-type operator pencil. There is an interesting example of the iterative system of equations for polynomials of the above type, which forms a discrete grid model for the differential equation studied by \textit{J. Ben Amara} et al. [Math. Notes 94, No. 1, 49--59 (2013; Zbl 1283.34075); translation from Mat. Zametki 94, No. 1, 55--67 (2013)]. The author introduces and studies direct and inverse spectral problems for Jacobi type pencils. In particular, he considers a certain special perturbation of the class of orthonormal polynomials on a finite real interval.
