By means of a difference analogue of the Wiman-Valiron theory, the authors treat a linear difference equation of the form \[ \sum_{j=0}^np_j(z)f(z+j)=q(z), \tag{1} \] where \(q(z)\), \(p_j(z)\), \(j=0, \dots, n\), \(p_0(z)p_n(z)\not\equiv0\) are polynomials. For a meromorphic function \(f(z)\), the authors denote by \(\sigma(f)\) the order of growth. They prove two theorems. One of the theorems is the following. Assume in (1) \[ \deg\left(\sum_{j=0}^n j p_j(z)\right)=d=\max_{0\leq j\leq n}(\deg(p_j))\geq1. \] Suppose that \(f(z)\) is a transcendental meromorphic solution of (1). Then \(\sigma(f)\geq 1\). The other theorem concerns the Borel exceptional values of meromorphic solution of (1) with just two dominate terms. Examples are mentioned for both theorems. The main tool is the difference version of the Wiman-Valiron theory due to \textit{Y.-M. Chiang} and \textit{S. Feng} [Constr. Approx. 44, No. 3, 313--326 (2016; Zbl 1360.30025)].
