Let \({\mathbb K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]\) be the polynomial algebra in \(n\geq 2\) variables over an algebraically closed field \(\mathbb K\) and let \(\mathcal E\) be the semigroup of all endomorphisms of the \(\mathbb K\)-algebra \({\mathbb K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]\). The degree of \(\sigma\in\mathcal E\), \(\sigma:(x_1,\ldots,x_n)\to(f_1,\ldots,f_n)\), is defined as the maximum of the degrees of \(f_1,\ldots,f_n\). Considering the set of endomorphisms \({\mathcal E}_{\leq d}\) of degree \(\leq d\) as a finite dimensional affine space, one equips \({\mathcal E}_{\leq d}\) with the Zariski topology and \(\mathcal E\) with the inductive limit topology. In the paper under review the author studies the following problem. Which are the closed subgroups of the automorphism group \(\mathcal G=\text{Aut}({\mathbb K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n])\) strictly containing the affine subgroup \(\mathcal A\) of \(\mathcal G\)? The main result states that when \(\text{char}({\mathbb K})=0\) any dense subgroup of \(\mathcal G\) strictly containing \(\mathcal A\) contains also the whole group of tame automorphisms. As the author mentions, it is an open problem whether every dense subgroup of \(\mathcal G\) strictly containing \(\mathcal A\) coincides with \(\mathcal G\).
