Let \(S\) be a Hausdorff locally convex space, \(C\) a subset of \(S\), and \(\Phi\) a family of real functions on \(S\). The author calls \(x\in C\) \(\Phi\)-exposed in \(C\), whenever there is \(\phi\in\Phi\) that has a strict maximum at \(x\), i.e., \(\phi(x) > \phi(y)\) for all \(y\in C \setminus \{x\}\), provided that \(C\) has at least two distinct points. The author proves that for compact metrizable sets, the \(\Phi\)-extremal points in the Krein-Milman-Ky Fan theorem can be replaced by \(\Phi\)-exposed points. Also, some clarifications and applications to variational principles are given.
