From the pen of the indisputable master interpreter of Aristotle's logic, this is an expository paper on Aristotle's prototype underlying logic, intended for a broad audience of educated readers. It starts with a discussion of Aristotle's demonstrative logic, Aristotle's ``general truth-and-consequence theory of demonstration'' as well as his ``immediate-deduction-chaining theory of deduction.'' There are many references to logic in the 20th century, in particular to the rediscovery of rule-based as opposed to tautology-based deduction. The author is very critical of the reception of Aristotle, and the many misunderstandings of his achievement: ``Major commentators and historians of logic have failed to notice that a general theory of demonstration is to be found in \textit{Analytics}.''
