To every tube domain \(\Omega=G/K\), \textit{B. H. Gross} [Math. Res. Lett. 1, No. 1, 1--9 (1994; Zbl 0873.32032)] has attached a canonical variation of Hodge structures \(\mathcal{V}_\Omega\to\Omega\), which is of Calabi-Yau type, that is, \(h^{n,0}=1\). Here the author settles the question whether or not this arises from geometry, via a family \(\mathcal{X}\to S\) of polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds, in the sense that the resulting period maps \(\tau:\Omega\to D_\Omega\) and \(\tilde{\Phi}:\tilde{S}\to D\) have identical period domains \(D_\Omega\simeq D\), and the image of the latter is open in the image of the former. Roughly speaking, if \(D_\Omega\simeq D\), the main result says that this is the case if and only if the characteristic forms of \textit{M. Sheng} and \textit{K. Zuo} [Math. Ann. 348, No. 1, 211--236 (2010; Zbl 1213.14018)] attached to the period maps \(\tau\) and \(\tilde{\Phi}\) are isomorphic.
