The existence of periodic orbits for a four-particle time-dependent Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) system, which describes an approximate model for the behaviour of a classical solid at low temperatures, is investigated by using averaging theory. The basic results from averaging theory are presented and the detailed proofs for the existence and multiplicity of periodic orbits of four-particle FPU chains are given.
