The paper deals with a \textit{it higher commutator theory} and its main result is providing a characterization of supernilpotent Mal'cev algebras. This generalizes the main result of \textit{N. Mudrinski} [Monatsh. Math. 172, No. 2, 161--166 (2013; Zbl 1284.08003)] on 2-supernilpotent Mal'cev algebras (here, but only in Introduction, the author refers to 3-supernilpotent Mal'cev algebras). There are two conjectures formulated and established for some special cases, e.g. for a variety in which the free algebra on 2 generators is finite. (1) Congruence meet-semidistributivity of a variety is equivalent to the \textit{neutrality} of all the higher commutators. (2) Existence of a weak difference term in a variety is equivalent to satisfying by a variety a Mal'cev condition implying that all \(n\)-supernilpotent algebras are polynomially equivalent to n-type expanded loops (for \(n\geq 2\)). There is a typo in the definition of the \textit{derived series}, this should be \([\theta]^{n+1}=[[\theta]^n,[\theta]^n]\).
