Almost complex structures on connected sums of complex projective spaces (Q2633052): Difference between revisions

As known, a necessary condition for the existence of an almost complex structure on a $4n$-dimensional compact manifold $M$ is the congruence $\chi(M)\equiv (-1)^n \sigma(M)\bmod 4$, where $\chi(M)$ is the Euler characteristic and $\sigma(M)$ is the signature of $M$. Thus, for even $m$, the connected sums above cannot carry an almost complex structure. In this article, the authors show that the $m$-fold connected sum $m\#\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^{2n}$ admits an almost complex structure if and only if $m$ is odd.
