A Bertrand curve is a space curve \(\gamma\) for which there exists a Bertrand mate \(\overline \gamma\) such that the pair \((\gamma, \overline \gamma)\) has a common normal line at each point. The pair \((\gamma, \overline \gamma) \) is called a Bertrand pair. These curves are characterized by an intrinsic equation relating their curvature and torsion. After reviewing methods of constructing such curves, the author shows that Bertrand curves defined from Salkowski curves are the only family of Bertrand curves which are slant helices.
