The present paper considers the problem of hydro-elastic waves in shallow water environments. The fluid layer over the flat solid bottom is assumed to be an ideal incompressible liquid. The underlying fluid flow is assumed to be irrotational. The ice cover is modeled as an elastic Kirchoff-Love plate. This ice plate floats freely on the liquid surface. Mathematically speaking, the author considers the limit of long waves under the weak nonlinearity assumption. As a result, he obtains the fifth order KdV-type equation also known as the Kawahara equation. Then, the nonlinear Schrödinger equation is derived from the Kawahara equation to describe the behaviour of wave packets. However, the main contributions of this article lie in the comparison of solitary wave packet parameters in the weakly and strongly nonlinear cases. For this, the author has to appeal to the central manifold theory along with quasi-normal form approximations. The author comes to the conclusion that the weakly nonlinear theory is enough to describe the properties of soliton wave packets in the presence of the ice cover. It would be fantastic if these predictions were also compared with some real world observations, as the author promises it in perspectives.
