Let \(K\subset \mathbb{C} \) be a compact set consisting of infinitely many points. By \(T_n^{(K)}(z)\) (resp. \(T_{n,w}^{(K)}(z)\)) is denoted the Chebyshev polynomial of order \(n\in \mathbb{N} \) (resp. weighted Chebyshev polynomial with respect to the weight function \(w(x)=\sqrt{1-x^2}\) ). Upper and lower bounds to the so-called Widom factors \(W_n(K)\) and \(W_n (K,w)\) are derived. Applying these bounds to the case \(K=E_a:=[-1,-a]\cup [a,1],\ a:=\cos (\alpha /2),\ 0<\alpha<\pi \), sharp upper and lower bounds for \(W_n(\Gamma _\alpha),\ \Gamma _\alpha :=\{e^{i\theta } \in [-\alpha,\alpha]\}, \) are established. Moreover, as a second main result, a monotonicity property for the Widom factors on \(\Gamma _\alpha \) is given, more precisely, it is proved that for fixed \(\Gamma _\alpha\) the sequence \(\{W_n(\Gamma _\alpha ) \}_{n=1}^\infty \) is strictly monotone increasing.
