The authors consider the balanced pair algorithm for Rauzy fractals and its applicability. In particular, they prove that given two primitive, unimodular Pisot substitutions \(\zeta_1\) and \(\zeta_2\) with the same incidence matrix satisfying the strong coincidence condition and inducing a proper lattice tiling, the balanced pair algorithm of \(\zeta_1\) and \(\zeta_2\) is defined and terminates iff the interior of the intersection of the associated Rauzy fractals is nonempty. In addition, the authors give necessary conditions based only on the spectral properties of the incidence matrix of the substitution that guarantee that the substitution does not have the geometric property (F), i.e., that the Rauzy fractal contains the origin as an interior point.
