A free boundary problem is a problem, where one solves a given partial differential equation in a domain that is not known a priori, meaning that there is no way to know the domain before knowing the solution. The boundary of such a domain is called free boundary. To avoid an underdetermined problem-setting, it is necessary to add an additional boundary condition on the free boundary to the usual boundary condition. In this chapter the author introduced Bernoulli type free boundary problems which play an important role in free surface fluid flow. Apart from basic regularity results the author discussed singularities as well as free boundary theory of water waves. The chapter contains the following sections: 4.1 Introduction, 4.2 Relation to Water Waves, 4.3 Background Knowledge on the Bernoulli Problem, 4.4 Notation, 4.5 Notion of Solution, 4.6 Monotonicity Formula and Consequences, 4.7 The Two-dimensional Case, 4.8 Definition of Degenerate Points, 4.9 Frequency Formula, 4.10 Blow-Up Limits, 4.11 Concentration Compactness in Two Dimensions, 4.12 Degenerate Points in Two Dimensions, 4.13 Main Result, 4.14 Extensions. For the entire collection see [Zbl 1461.49002].
