Let \({\mathcal P}^2\) denote the set of convex polygons in the Euclidean plane, and let \({\mathcal P}_o^2\) be the subset of polygons containing the origin. A map \(Z:{\mathcal P}_o^2\to{\mathcal P}^2\) is called a Minkowski valuation if \(Z(P\cup Q)+Z(P\cap Q)=Z(P)+Z(Q)\) for all \(P,Q\in {\mathcal P}_o^2\) with convex union. The map \(Z\) is called \(\mathrm{SL}(2)\) contravariant (\(\mathrm{SL}(2)\) covariant) if \(Z(\phi P)=\phi^{-1}Z(P)\) (respectively, \(Z(\phi P)=\phi Z(P)\)) for all \(P\in{\mathcal P}_o^2\) and all \(\phi\in\mathrm{SL}(2)\). The authors succeed with determining all Minkowski valuations \(Z:{\mathcal P}_o^2\to{\mathcal P}^2\) that are \(\mathrm{SL}(2)\) contravariant or covariant. This extends work of \textit{M. Ludwig} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 357, No. 10, 4191--4213 (2005; Zbl 1077.52005)], who in addition assumed homogeneity properties. The two-dimensional case exhibits Minkowski valuations that do not extend to higher dimensions. Some corollaries, with additional assumptions, characterize projection bodies and difference bodies or variations thereof.
