This paper discusses the application of a newly proposed (see [\textit{A. Anssari-Benam} and \textit{A. Bucchi}, Int. J. Non Lin. Mech. 128, Article ID 103626, 44 p. (2021; \url{doi:10.1016/j.ijnonlinmec.2020.103626})] generalised neo-Hookean strain energy function within the family of limiting chain extensibility models to the problem of extension and torsion in incompressible isotropic rubber-like tubes and solid circular cylinders. Main contributions of the paper include the prediction of the critical axial stretch (\(\lambda_{\mathrm{cz}}\)) at which Poynting-type effects reverse in stretched specimens, and the demonstration of compatibility of the new model with the classical scaling law of \textit{R. W. Penn} and \textit{E. A. Kearsley} [Trans. Soc. Rheol. 20, No. 2, 227--238 (1976; \url{doi:10.1122/1.549411})].
