This article gives a classification of a special class of smooth Fano fourfold of Picard number 2, more precisely, those smooth Fano fourfolds of Picard number 2 with hypersurface Cox ring. It is well known that the Cox ring of a Fano variety is finitely generated. We say that a variety \(X\) with class group \(K:=\mathrm{Cl}(X)\) has a hypersurface Cox ring if we have a K-graded presentation \[R(X):=R_g=\mathbb C[T_1,\dots,T_r]/<g>, \] where \(g\) is homogeneous of degree \(\mu\in K\) and \(T_1,\dots,T_r\) define a minimal system of K-homogeneous generators. In this situation, we call \(R(X)\) spread if each monomial of degree \(\mu\) is a convex combination of monomials of \(g\). Among the del Pezzo surfaces, there are no smooth ones with a hypersurface Cox ring, and the first examples of smooth Fano varieties with a hypersurface Cox ring show up in dimension three. This article classifies smooth Fano fourfolds of Picard number 2 with hypersurface Cox ring. For any hypersurface Cox ring \(R(X)\) graded by \(K:=\mathrm{Cl}(X)\), let's write \(w_i:=deg (T_i)\) for the generator degrees, then the anticanonical class of \(X\) is given by \[-\mathcal{K}=w_1+\dots+w_r-\mu \in \mathrm{Cl}(X).\] If \(X\) is Fano, then \(X\) can be reconstructed as the GIT quotient of the set of \(-\mathcal{K}\)-semistable points of \(\mathrm{Spec}(R_g)\) by the quasitorus \(\mathrm{Spec}(\mathbb C[K])\). In the case of a smooth Fano fourfould \(X\) of Picard number two, we have \(\mathrm{Cl}(X)=\mathbb Z^2\) and thus \(\mathrm{Spec}(\mathbb C[K])\) is a two- dimensional torus. Hence the hypersurface Cox ring \(R(X)\) is of dimension six and has seven generators. The authors give a classification for all smooth Fano fourfold of Picard number 2 with spread hypersurface Cox ring via specifying \((w_1,\dots,w_7)\), deg\((g)\), \(-\mathcal K\) and \(\mathcal{K}^4\).
