In the paper under review, the authors studied the spectral subspaces associated to closed sets of rank-one perturbations of diagonal operators and, hence, of bounded normal operators of multiplicity one on a separable, infinite dimensional complex Hilbert space using functional equations involving Borel series. Let \(D_{\Lambda}\) be a diagonal operator on an infinite dimensional separable complex Hilbert space \(\mathcal{H}\). Let \(T = D_{\Lambda} + u \otimes v\) be a rank-one perturbation of a diagonalizable normal operator \(D_{\Lambda}\) with respect to a basis \(E = (e_n)_{n \geq 1}\) and the vectors \(u\) and \(v\) have Fourier coefficients \((\alpha_n)_{n \geq 1}\) and \((\beta_n)_{n \geq 1}\) with respect to \(E\), respectively. Then \(T\) has non-trivial closed invariant subspaces if \(\sum_{1}^{\infty}|\alpha_n|< \infty\) and \(\sum_{1}^{\infty}|\beta_n|< \infty\). Similar results hold for finite rank perturbations of \(D_{\Lambda}\). The authors also proved that the operators which are not a scalar multiple of the identity operator have non-trivial closed hyperinvariant subspaces which is an extension of previous results of \textit{Q. Fang} and \textit{J. Xia} [J. Funct. Anal. 263, No. 5, 1356--1377 (2012; Zbl 1266.47011)] and of \textit{C. Foias} et al. [J. Funct. Anal. 253, No. 2, 628--646 (2007; Zbl 1134.47004)].
