Even though first countable topological groups are metrizable, the behavior of first countable topological semigroups can be quite bad. The author gives examples of non-metrizable first countable cancellative topological semigroups that have one or more of the following properties: quasi-metrizable, locally compact, Moore space, Nagata, paracompact.
