In this review paper the author considers the Carleman estimate for a general linear, second-order partial differential equation. Using pseudoconvexity the basic idea behind the proof of the estimate is highlighted, and the proof is given for the Helmholtz equation. Some applications in control theory and in inverse problems are provided. Finally, the author lists five open problems related to the Carleman estimates. \noindent Primary classification: 34B45 \noindent Secondary Classification: 35R30, 25R25
