This present paper studies the maximum number of limit cycles for a class of cubic near-Hamiltonian systems, which are in the form of Liénard-Rayleigh oscillators. The authors obtain that the least upper bound of this number is 2. And they also provide the parameter conditions such that the system have no, one or two limit cycles, respectively. Moreover, a counterexample is constructed to show that the method of rotated vector fields is not valid in proving the uniqueness of limit cycles.
