The celebrated monstrous moonshine established the unexpected connection between the monster group \(M\) and modular functions, in particular, the \(j\) function. For other finite simple groups, it is naturally expected that there are similar moonshine relations. For the Mathieu group \(M_{24}\), there are the so-called umbral moonshine, which associates a vector-valued mock modular form to each conjugacy class of the group by identifying the former with the graded characters of a certain infinite-dimensional module. In this paper, the focus is shifted from the vector-valued mock modular forms to certain meromorphic Jacobi forms. One key step to understand the umbral moonshine is the construction of the relevant umbral moonshine modules. The authors solve the module problem for four of the five cases of pure \(D\)-type umbral moonshine by defining vertex operator superalgebras and needed finite group actions.
