Let us recall that a matrix is called an \(M\)-matrix, if its off-diagonal entries are nonpositive and the real parts of its eigenvalues are nonnegative. A quasi-Toeplitz matrix is a semi-infinite matrix that can be written as a sum of a Toeplitz matrix \(T(a)\), where \((T(a))_{ij}=a_{j-i}\) and \(a(z)=\sum_{i\in\mathbb Z}a_iz^i\), and a compact correction \(E\), where \(\lim_i\sum_{j=1}^\infty|e_{ij}|=0\). Here the author investigates which semi-infinite quasi-Toeplitz matrices are also \(M\)-matrices. He presents some necessary and sufficient conditions for a matrix to be quasi-Toeplitz and \(M\)-matrix. He also shows that any leading principal submatrix of a quasi-Toeplitz \(M\)-matrix is an \(M\)-matrix as well. Next quasi-Toeplitz \(M\)-matrices are studied in the context of square roots. In particular, it is proved that any such invertible matrix has a square root which is also quasi-Toeplitz \(M\)-matrix. The final sections contain computations of the square root of a matrix and a discussion of those results.
