A new method is presented for the pole assignment by constant output feedback of minimal systems described by a proper transfer function matrix with \(m\) rows, \(p\) columns and \(n\), being the McMillan degree. The method is based on asymptotic linearisation of the pole assignment map related to the problem. The solution is given in closed form in terms of a one-parameter family of static feedback compensators. Conditions for the generic and exact solvability of the arbitrary pole assignment are given in terms of the numbers \(m\), \(p\), \(n\) and the rank of a new system. It is shown that the method works generically when \(mp>n\).
