The paper elaborates theoretical foundations of invariance and stability of fuzzy systems based on a historical study of dynamical systems theory. By combining Liapunov's ''classical'' stability theory concerned with the equilibrium points of the system and the dynamical behavior of this system in a neighborhood of these points with the ''modern'' stability counterpart based on the concept of a structurally stable systems, i.e. of systems whose behavior is not drastically altered by a slight change in its structure, this paper's author performs an analysis of the behavior of a family of trajectories generated by all models near to the nominal models. The paper is based also on the theory of fuzzy systems, introduced recently by the same author. The fuzzy derivative of a real- valued function and the concept of limit set of a fuzzy system are defined too. Generalising LaSalle's invariance principle the author proposes an invariance principle for fuzzy systems. The concept of a- stability is introduced, removing the binary distinction between stability and instability. Criteria of a-stability are discussed.
